How the year plays out

Seasons explained

Thailand has three broad seasons: cool and dry from November to February, hot from March to May, and wet from June to October. The cool-dry season is peak for Bangkok, Chiang Mai and the Andaman coast (Phuket, Krabi, Koh Lanta), with Christmas and New Year the most expensive fortnight of the year. Prices and crowds ease in March, though the heat builds and Songkran in mid-April brings a short domestic spike.

The wet season is where the coast split matters. The southwest monsoon hits the Andaman coast from May to October, but the Gulf coast (Koh Samui, Koh Phangan, Koh Tao) stays comparatively dry until its own wet season arrives in October and November. That means June to September, which is off-season on paper and priced accordingly, can still deliver a good beach holiday if you pick the Gulf side. Rain in Bangkok itself tends to come as short, heavy afternoon bursts rather than all-day washouts.

Thailand is a long-haul destination that suits the longer UK breaks. The summer holidays are off-season on the Andaman coast but the Gulf islands are largely dry, and flights and hotels are far cheaper than at the Christmas peak; this is one of the few long-haul beach options where the UK summer break can be good value. February half term hits the cool-dry peak, with excellent weather but the highest prices of the year after Christmas.
