Greetings from

Sunny Beach

Bulgaria

A long, shallow Black Sea beach and some of Europe's cheapest family holidays

Best value: May, June and September

Sunny Beach is Bulgaria's biggest resort: miles of sand and shallow water on the Black Sea. It consistently ranks among Europe's best-value family destinations, but its season is short. It runs from late May to late September, and almost everything shuts outside it.

Our verdict

Early to mid-June and the first half of September are the best-value windows: the resort is fully open and the sea is warm, but prices sit well below the July–August peak. Late June is also good value for families whose summer holidays start early.

How the year plays out

Seasons explained

Sunny Beach sits on Bulgaria's southern Black Sea coast, north of Burgas. Its climate is continental-edged rather than truly Mediterranean: warm to hot summers, with highs in the high twenties to around 30°C, and cold winters. The beach itself is the draw for families: several kilometres of fine sand shelving gently into calm, shallow water. Next door, the old town of Nessebar, a UNESCO World Heritage Site on a small peninsula, gives you somewhere to go in the evening that isn't a bar strip.

The season is compact. Hotels, beach bars and attractions open through May and are fully running by early June. July and August are the peak, with the warmest sea, the highest prices and the busiest beach. Prices fall quickly once the summer holidays end, and September is warm and much quieter. By October most hotels have closed, and from November to April the resort is effectively shut, as are most UK flights to Burgas.

The resort has a reputation for nightlife aimed at young groups, concentrated in its centre. Families usually do better at the quieter northern end, or in Sveti Vlas or Nessebar just along the bay. The Post Office Travel Money Family Holiday Costs Barometer 2026 ranked Sunny Beach among Europe's cheapest family destinations for day-to-day costs such as meals, drinks and attractions. Bulgaria adopted the euro in January 2026.

For UK families

Sunny Beach in the school holidays

Sunny Beach is a summer-holidays destination, and it is among the cheapest in Europe for families during those weeks, although July and August are still its own peak. Scottish and Northern Irish families have the edge: their breaks start in late June and early July, before the resort's prices climb, while English and Welsh holidays run straight through the most expensive weeks. The final week of August is marginally quieter as some European schools return. Whitsun half term (late May) is the earliest realistic school break, with the resort opening up and the sea still cool. October half term, February half term and Easter all fall outside the season, when the resort and most flights to Burgas are shut.
