Athens has a hot-summer Mediterranean climate. July and August regularly pass 35°C, the Acropolis closes during heatwaves, and because the city is the gateway to the islands, flights and hotels are at their most expensive. Many Athenians leave in August, so parts of the city are quieter than you might expect, but the heat makes sightseeing hard work.

April to early June is the first shoulder: wildflowers on the Attic hills, comfortable temperatures for walking, and Greek Orthodox Easter, which can fall on a different date from the UK's and brings its own short price spike. September and October are the second shoulder and, for most visitors, the better one: the sea around the Saronic islands is warmest in September, the light is superb, and prices ease week by week. November to March is off-season, with mild but unsettled weather, uncrowded museums and the cheapest fares of the year. Some island ferries run reduced timetables.
