How the year plays out
Seasons explained
Mallorca has a Mediterranean climate similar to mainland Spain's east coast: hot, dry summers and mild, wetter winters. Peak season is July and August, when the island's beach resorts around the Bay of Palma and the north-east coast are at their most crowded and expensive, and flights from UK regional airports are at their fullest.
May, June and September into October are the shoulder seasons and the best value for most visitors: warm enough to swim from May, considerably quieter than midsummer, and noticeably cheaper. The genuine quirk of Mallorca's calendar is winter: a significant number of the island's package-holiday resort hotels close entirely from around November to April, concentrating what tourism there is into Palma itself and the handful of hotels that do stay open, so a winter trip needs more planning than a summer one.

October half term sits right at the edge of Mallorca's season: some resort hotels are still open with beach weather intact, but availability narrows as the month goes on, so book earlier than you would for other destinations. The summer holidays are Mallorca's peak, with August the busiest and priciest month on the island. Easter usually falls before most resort hotels reopen for the season, so a trip then generally means Palma city rather than the beach resorts. The Christmas and February half-term breaks fall well within the resort off-season; check hotel opening dates carefully before booking a beach-resort stay.
