Amsterdam has a mild, changeable maritime climate: no month is dramatically hot or cold, and rain is possible year-round, so weather matters less to timing here than events and demand do. Tourist numbers and prices stay comparatively high all year, but two dates create sharp, predictable spikes: King's Day on 27 April, when the whole city turns into a street party and hotel rates jump for several days either side, and the New Year period, when fireworks and canal-side parties push prices to their highest of the year.

April's tulip season (outside King's Day itself) and September are generally considered the best combination of good weather odds and manageable crowds. Midsummer, June to August, is busy and comparatively expensive with long queues at the Anne Frank House and Rijksmuseum unless timed slots are booked well ahead. January and February are the closest thing Amsterdam has to an off-season: still busy by most cities' standards, but with the year's lowest hotel rates outside the New Year fortnight.
